Gregory Betts: These ten cards were produced by administering a Rorschach test on an Artificial Intelligence deep dream generator, adhering to the protocols of the International Society of the Rorschach & Projective Methods (Switzerland). In a typical Rorschach test, the administrator and subject sit next to each other at a table and discuss the inkblots calmly. These AI-generated readings of the Rorschach were also produced at a table, with the administrator sitting slightly behind the subject. I sought to minimize my influence on the subject’s responses, producing a “relaxed but controlled atmosphere.” The AI responded to the ten official inkblots that are almost but not quite symmetrical, all printed on a separate white card, 18 by 24 cm. The first phase of test administration is Free Association, followed by a period of interaction to guide and develop the impressions of the subject’s reading. This Inquiry Phase clarifies the subject’s responses, rather than steers them in alternate directions. The last phase of the test’s administration is to analyze the subject’s responses, but that is beyond the ken of this project. Instead, I offer to you the raw data, invite you to consider whether it suggests cognition, personality, motivations, response tendencies, cognitive operations, affectivity, or personal/interpersonal perceptions.
