In Shade Studies CDN Warren explores the typewriter’s capacity for painting, weaving and composing mindbending patterns and structures.

From the artist's foreword:

Shade Studies constitutes the results of a protracted, exhausting and at times faltering conversation between myself and an Olivetti Roma. Twelve experimental works, each of which helped form and inform the next in an exponential unraveling over which I was glad to quickly lose all control. The process of producing these studies has been an education; full of surprises, and far more like the progress of a snowball than a planned meander; a downhill tumble taken hand in hand with a machine I now know intimately well.

Gregory Betts:

The varieties, the impressions, the subtleties of depression: Shade Studies takes the ink hit of typewriter metal on page back to the Proto-Indo-European root of Study – “steu” to hit, to push, to knock, beat, apply diligently – and demonstrates a dance in the depths of the ink pools of each letter. Dam impressive: these elegant patterns make a new art of shaped waters.
